We’re Going To Have Some Fun Whether You Like It Or Not

(A photo of something fun I did a couple of years ago: my personalized Converses aka my Poopy Shoes.)
Surprise, surprise: it was only after I started this blog that I realized it lacked focus. And I am ALL about focus. I like to fixate! And then very very quickly make things happen. Otherwise I panic (I just momentarily spaced on how to spell the word “panic.” I wrote pancake instead. I kind of prefer pancake. From now on, I’m going to start “pancaking” instead of panicking.)
Anyway, when I realized I didn’t know what I was doing with this blog, I immediately stopped posting like the real good quitter I sometimes am. The thing is, I’m writing a book right now (Thank you, St. Martin’s Press!), and it turns out writing a book is hard. Mostly it involves a lot of pancaking. And the blog was just not happening.
But then I started reading Mighty Girl’s “30 Days of Fun” series, which is exactly what it sounds like: every day for thirty days she went out of her way to do something fun and then shared it with the internet. Genius. But why stop at thirty days? Why not make a whole blog about doing something fun every damn day no matter what?
You like that? You like how I’m taking this “fun” idea and turning it into a very un-fun obligation? I can see it now: a day in the not too distant future will come, and I’ll have a mini freak out about how I did nothing fun that day and have no post, and, oh my god, I am a failure. My boyfriend Ben is already dreading this day, and he knows it’s going to come. And when it does, he’ll accuse me of being first hungry and then on my period, and these accusations will NOT help.*
However, until then, let’s have some fun.
*I actually have a hypothesis that this won’t be hard. (And, yes, I am totally prepared to slather my words in BBQ sauce and eat them, because I might be wrong.) I suspect that, for the most part, all of us already do something fun every day. Only we’re so busy that we enjoy it for barely a moment and then immediately forget about it. Which is bullshit. I’m done forgetting my fun.

You should come visit me and we could take the kayak out. That would be fun.
Would love to, Jennie! Hope you had a great CA vacay…
Love this post. How did I forget my college “fun board”? Senior year my fellow dorm-mates made a memo board (this was pre- white board days, let alone blogs) with sections for each of us. At the top it said, Have More Fun, Because Fun Is A Good Thing To Have. Every day, we had to write one fun thing that happened. So even on an un-fun day, you had to create something fun out of whatever happened. Great practice, and the group accountability / support increased the fun.
